The Three Kings Epiphany Trail

Following the trail of the Three Kings up the Schafberg Mountain: along the tracks of the Schafberg Cog Railway in St. Wolfgang, this trail tells the story of the Three Wise Men’s search for baby Jesus, creating an inspiring experience for people old and young.

In the beginning was a mere inkling of light: a bright star that the Three Kings had discovered in the sky. Amazed by this spectacle, the Kings followed its bright light without knowing the destination it would lead them to. Still, they were certain that the pilgrimage would be worthwhile. Join them and embark on a journey full of lasting impressions on the steam powered Schafberg Advent Cog Railway. At an altitude of 1,364 metres, at the Schafbergalm Hut, life-size nativity figures adorn the mountain from the beginning of Advent in the Wolfgangsee Region, setting the mood for this symbolic path. The view from the Schafbergalm Hut over Lake Wolfgangsee reveals a distinctive monument: the 16-metre-high Light of Peace lantern, the emblem of Lake Wolfgangsee Advent and Europe’s largest floating Advent lantern.

Making your way down into the valley, following the comet, you will be accompanied by shepherds and grape carriers typical of the Salzkammergut Region. As you walk back to the village centre from the valley station of the cog railway, you can discover a total of 70 of these impressive nativity figures.

The thematic highlight of the Three Kings Epiphany Trail is a depiction of the stable of Bethlehem at St. Wolfgang’s lordly castle (Haus der Herrschaft). On the day of Epiphany, also the three holy figures reach their destination and arrive at the lordly castle.

Perhaps this Advent trail will lead to your personal inspiration.
