St. Gilgen – Advent goes Baroque

Christmas lights: Even from afar, the 11-metre-high candle placed directly on the lakeshore lights up and guides you to the village of St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee, where far more than 50 large candles further lighten up the scenery.

The delightful Baroque interpretations of the St. Nicholas story on the church square or the traditional bellringers colourfully and elegantly depict different scenes of the Advent season.

The lavish decorations by artist Raja Schwahn-Reichmann transforms the village into a place of unique atmosphere. The sculpturally painted figures – people, angels, animals – are inspired by the colourful three-dimensionality of Baroque-style wall and ceiling paintings and stuns viewers with ever new details.

The houses and streets are enchantingly decorated with hundreds of red and gold St. Gilgen Advent candles. A tapestry of sound with authentic regional folk music adds to the special atmosphere.
